Repair or replace?

Every HVAC system eventually asks for a decision: patch it up again, or replace it now. Get that call wrong in either direction and it costs you — replacing too early wastes money still left in a working system, and repairing a failing one too many times can quietly cost more, month after month, than starting fresh would have.

This tool exists to take the guesswork out of that decision. Enter your system's age and the two numbers in front of you — what a repair costs today, and what full replacement would cost — and it converts both into a monthly cost, the same way you'd compare a car payment against a repair bill. Whichever option costs less per month, for as long as it will realistically last, is the fiscally correct choice.

No sales pitch, no pressure. The comparison uses the same replacement-analysis method taught in formal capital-investment decisions, grounded in published guidance from the U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR — not an industry rule of thumb built to nudge you toward new equipment.

How this works: each option's cost is divided by how many months it covers, so a repair on an older system and a full replacement aren't compared dollar-for-dollar — they're compared per month of use. This is standard replacement-analysis practice (see Park, C.S., Contemporary Engineering Economics, Pearson). Past repair spending and the original purchase price are left out on purpose — they're sunk costs and don't affect today's decision.

Assumptions: Actual HVAC lifespan estimates vary by equipment type and range roughly 12–20 years for central air conditioners and heat pumps and 15–25 years for furnaces, per the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, and industry data reported by trade groups including ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America). Separately, ENERGY STAR's own repair-or-replace guidance recommends considering replacement once a system is over 10 years old (15 for a furnace or boiler) — a decision threshold, not a lifespan estimate. This tool uses a working assumption of 15 years of full service life for both the existing and a new system. Your actual equipment may last more or less than this; if you know your system's real expected remaining life, that's better than this tool's default.
